Introduction
Sirumalai is a region of 60,000 acres situated 25 km from Dindigul and 90 km from Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. There are many high hills in the area and it consists of two districts areas of Dindigul and Madurai. Sirumalai is a dense forest region with a moderate climate throughout the year. The famous Sirumalai banana is slowly disappearing from disease. For few decades farmers from Sirumalai of Madurai District used to work isolated in their own small farm in a disorganized manner. In the absence of effective organizational structure, the farmers were on the verge of becoming incompetent in the market in a captivating position under local buyers or village level brokers. They had less decision making power in terms of production and marketing. When they were coming together, their challenges minimized and their capacities multiplied collectively. The need of the hour is cultivating hope and building resilience among the farmers by introducing and identifying suitable and sustainable technologies / practices for each of the contexts. Collectivization of producers, especially small and marginal farmers, into producer organizations has emerged as one of the most effective pathways to address the many challenges of Sirumalai farmers.
SVFPC (SIRUMALAI VEGETABLE FARMERS PRODUCER COMPANY) has been formed and registered with the vision of establishing a community where small ad marginal farmers and Landless Agricultural Coolies lead a decent and peaceful life.
The objectives behind to start SVFPC is:
- To Mobilize the Small and Marginal Farmers, Tribes and Landless Agriculture Laborers in to micro level groups at the village level in Sirumalai and nearby Villages to build their FPO.
- Federating them and implement product specific Cluster (Particularly on “Sirumalai Banana” / commercial crop cycles, strengthening sirumalai farmers capacity through adopting Sustainable Agricultural Practices.
- Facilitate access to fair & remunerative market including linking producer groups to marketing opportunities by market aggregators.
With this objectives Company has mobilized 513 shareholders with the great support of NABARD and gathered Rs.5,13,000 as a capital share at the rate of 100 shares of Rs 10 each. It has been collected from shareholders through SHG, farmers club to the federation and this amount should be sent through NEFT to SVFP Company Bank account. All shareholder details have been well documented at Company. SVFPC focused on Small and Marginal Farmers and Landless Agricultural Laborers in Sirumalai hills, SHGs Members, Tribal community, Farmers Group and Joint Liability Groups to form Producer Company. The company has been registered under Company Act 2013. The registration number is U01100TN2017PTC115811. Then the company got all licenses like CIN, GSTIN, PAN and TAN numbers. Now SVFPC creates a “PLATFORM” to discuss farmers’ difficulties and to seek solution among them. It helps to come out from the clutches of Local Money Lenders. Further it helps to swim out from the existing Auction system. It helps its members to avail internal lending and credit facilities from NABARD and other financial institutions. Finally it gives knowledge on various techniques of marketing feasibility and marketing availability.
